It was Easter Sunday in 1500 when the first Portuguese ships traveled to the Indies, a route they already made commonly, but this time something made the sailors curious when they saw a mountain a very high far away that they called Monte Pascoal.

The Portuguese were already aware of lands discovered by the Spanish to the right of the Atlantic, but they were unaware of the true size of the Americas. This time they moved a little further away from the route and docked the first Portuguese ships in Brazil, at the time named "Ilha de Vera Cruz" because they thought it was an island.

It was the first contact of the Portuguese with the indigenous people who inhabited the region that is now called Porto Seguro - 710km from Salvador, Bahia.

The first capital of Brazil was Salvador, the city of Baía de Todos os Santos was the main port area that transported raw materials from Brazil to Portugal. The city was also the main trade of African human trafficking, so Salvador is the center of Afro-Brazilian culture, and much of Brazilian culture is mixed with African culture, such as capoeira, samba, feijoada and many spices.
